Study skills are tools employed when the learner wishes to apply useful hints, tips, or strategies to complete specific or assigned tasks more effectively (e.g., taking notes, completing a multiple-choice test, making an oral presentation). Study skills are essential at the upper elementary, middle, and secondary levels, but acquisition of study skills should begin early in the educational career. When adolescent students with learning disabilities have not been taught study skills during elementary education, they often lack sufficient skills to meet their various educational demands. Deficiencies are often found in the listening, note-taking, test-taking, time-management, using appropriate rates of reading, locating useful information, and organizational abilities. Therefore, study skills should be taught at all levels to ensure students have the necessary skills to navigate the educational tasks successfully in upper grades.
