While business leaders typically have greater responsibility for outcomes than
followers, ideally leaders and followers collaborate to achieve common goals. Leaders
and followers are both affected by dynamics associated with their positions. For
example, leaders often are ascribed great power, and some leaders have a tendency to
misuse power when in a leadership role. Leaders tend to also carry privilege and
responsibility. Leaders also have access and responsibility for enormous amounts of
information, and must determine how to best communicate this to followers. Leaders
need to act with consistency and loyalty in order to be seen as credible. Followers are also confronted with several challenges, including obligation, obedience, cynicism, and
dissent, and must have clear ideas about how to deliver bad news.
