Orexin release increases before waking and helps maintain a state of wakefulness throughout the day. The reticular formation is stimulated by orexin-secreting neurons. When the reticular formation neurons are active, they cause the thalamus to begin transmitting external sensory stimuli to the cerebral cortex.
