Compare and contrast defensive and nondefensive communication.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. In the workplace, defensive language creates barriers between people, whereas nondefensive communication helps to open and deepen relationships. Defensive communication includes aggressive, malevolent messages as well as passive, withdrawn messages. Nondefensive communication is assertive, direct, and powerful. Though it can be misinterpreted as aggressiveness, assertiveness is indeed nondefensive. Corporations today are increasingly engaged in situations such as courtroom battles and media exchanges that are fertile ground for defensive communication yet benefit greatly from nondefensive language and emotionally intelligent communication.
