Explain how Enlightenment ideas about personal happiness influenced marriage and divorce from the eighteenth to the 20th century in the United States.
What will be an ideal response?
During the 18th century, Enlightenment ideas about freedom and personal
happiness gradually replaced traditional religious and social ideas about putting the
needs of family and society above individual happiness. As a result, in Europe and the
United States, women and men began to marry for love instead of family
considerations. Gradually, the idea that if one could marry for personal fulfillment one
could divorce for the same reason became common as well.
