Professional development has historically been problematic. Professional development activities were often characterized by workshops that were top-down, trendy, and failed to meet the actual learning needs of teachers who were at different points on the learning continuum with respect to the workshop topic. Some needed and wanted it, whereas others already knew about the topic or didn't think it applied to their own unique teaching situation. Elementary teachers were thrown in with high school teachers, and math and science with art and music.
Using technology attempts to solve these problems by giving professional development organizers the tools they need to customize topics to the specific learning needs of teachers and provide mechanisms for teachers to ask questions, raise concerns, and share successes as they implement changes in their classrooms.
