Discuss the conflict of interest inherent in managed care.

What will be an ideal response?

• The conflict of interest in managed care is centered on the need to reduce the use of various health services, products, and procedures. The application of across-the-board methods to reduce the use of health services will affect both the services that may have been overused and overprovided in the past as well as the services that may not have been overused and overprovided. The net result may be that all health services utilization will decrease. Subsequently, patients who need some services may not receive them in the future. Because physicians are directly involved with their patients on a face-to-face basis, it is very likely that the issues of conflict of interest will be most apparent in this part of any managed-care system.
