A culturally responsive classroom emphasizes the need to use cultural knowledge, prior experiences, and ethnically diverse styles of teaching. Within the culturally responsive classroom are five areas that are deemed effective for student learners who have a disability, for students who are English learners and for students with culturally diverse backgrounds. Explain why you agree or if you disagree that dialogue, collaboration, visual representation, explicit instruction and inquiry, are relevant to overall success for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: Provide the area, the role, and the practices that take place for dialogue, collaboration, visual representation, explicit instruction and inquiry and indicate if the area, role, and practice are relevant to success. For example, the area of collaboration is very important to overall success as students are given opportunities to construct meaning through social interactions and the students can work with others in the classroom who have more content knowledge and a stronger language base. In addition, practices such as classwide peers, buddy systems, group discussions, and PALS provide a variety of options for students to work with other classmates, learn from one another, and have less anxiety about completing work, as they will always have a partner or team to turn to for help and assistance.
