Students should identify and explain increased opportunities for intercultural contact, enhanced business effectiveness, and enhanced self-awareness.
Increased opportunity for intercultural contact: It is easier and more common to travel in today's society—for pleasure, for study, and for work purposes. Also, there is increased diversity in our society so that we may come into contact with more people in our relationships that are of different cultures. Last, the Internet grants us access to interact with people from around the globe.
Enhanced business effectiveness: Today's workforce is increasingly diverse, and people today have a greater opportunity to travel for work purposes. Thus, it is beneficial in business contexts to study intercultural communication because it can lead to greater success and effectiveness domestically and abroad.
Enhanced self-awareness: People often learn more about themselves and their own cultural background and identities by coming into contact with people whose cultural backgrounds differ from their own. Thus, when you learn about others, you learn more about yourself.
