1. Provide a brief summary of what the research says about when math deficiencies of students with learning deficiencies emerge, and how it progresses through secondary grade levels. Comment on how this impacts you as a special educator

What will be an ideal response?

Research indicates that the math deficiencies of students with learning problems emerge in the early years and continue throughout secondary school. Thus, math problems are common at all age levels. During the preschool and primary years, many young children cannot sort objects by size, match objects, understand the language of math, or grasp the concept of rational counting. During the elementary years, they have trouble with computational skills. In the middle and upper grades, students experience difficulty with fractions, decimals, percentages, and measurement. Secondary students may experience problems in these areas, but it is not uncommon for them to make errors similar to those of younger students (e.g., errors in place value and basic facts).

[Students' responses will vary on how this impacts them as a special educator.]
