Describe how a variable displacement (or displacement on demand) lifter works to deactivate a cylinder.
What will be an ideal response?
It works by controlling the oil flow in and out of the lifter. This controls the action of the lifter and the opening of the valves by allowing a lock pin to push in the pin housing. This locks the lifter in the "valve closed" position. The pin housing and the lifter body are now independent of each other. This allows the pressure from the valve spring to force the pushrod down into the bore of the lifter and follow the contour of the camshaft, thus keeping the valve closed, effectively keeping the cylinder from producing power and preventing compression resistance.
