The provider receives confirmation from T.Q.'s physician that T.Q. has a PIDD and

orders the gamma globulin (GamaSTAN). Differentiate between primary and secondary
immunodeficiency.

What will be an ideal response?

In primary immunodeficiencies, components of the immune system itself are absent, improperly
developed, nonfunctioning or malfunctioning. Secondary immunodeficiencies are associated with
certain drug therapies such as corticosteroids, cancer chemotherapy, and antibiotics; radiation
therapy; splenectomy; and viral infections, and certain diseases, such as human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) and cancer. Persons with primary disease are immunodeficient; persons with secondary
disease are immunocompromised. Primary immunodeficiency disorders are rare and often serious;
secondary disorders are more common and might be less severe. The common indicator in all
immunodeficiency disorders is the development of unusual or recurrent, severe infections.
