The Berlin Conference brought together European countries to divide the continent of Africa for the purpose of colonization. The boundaries did not respect the existing cultural and ethnic patterns, nor the presence of the many kingdoms there. Even after European colonialists left, the political boundaries remained, and contribute to the ongoing political conflicts.
