Describe the development of cancer
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Cancer begins with abnormal DNA (oncogenes), which produce mutated proteins (carcinogens). This is known as initiation. Once the body's natural killers become overwhelmed fighting these mutations, the cells begin to reproduce rapidly, forming a tumor. If the tumor is malignant, it begins to invade surrounding tissues, causing them to have trouble functioning and, left unchecked, may metastasize, spreading the cancer throughout the body.
