Marta's mother recently watched a clip on the news about infant brain development, and is interested in learning more about sensitive periods. How would you explain this concept to her?

What will be an ideal response?

Sensitive periods refer to periods in the child's development when the brain is primed to learn foundational skills that subsequent development builds on. The information acquired during sensitive periods is affected by internal factors within the child as well as factors within the environment. Although brains can "rewire" themselves once a sensitive period has passed, development and learning become more difficult.
