Terri claimed to be listening to her mother when she told her to take out the trash. However, when later confronted by her mother, she admitted she forgot what she said and subsequently did not take out the trash

Explain the three stages of the listening process and analyze how Terri is not engaging in effective listening.

What will be an ideal response?

The listening process begins with receiving. A person must receive a message
in order to move to stage two, interpretation. Perhaps there was noise that interfered
with Terri's ability to listen to her mother. Terri could have also been selectively
listening (which occurs when we attend to some parts of a message and ignore others)
and did not attend to the message to take out the garbage since it involved completing
an unpleasant task. Stage two refers to interpreting through the use of critical thinking
and remembering skills. If Terri received the message, she did not remember the
message. By not remembering the message she was unable to move to stage three.
Stage three is responding and involves active listening and confirming responses. Terri
obviously did not respond to her mother and communicate a confirming response. Her
ineffective listening resulted in the trash remaining in the house and a confrontation
with her mother.
