Why is the DSM-IV-TR used?

What will be an ideal response?

Clinicians use it for diagnosing mental disorders. It is important to utilize the DSM-IV-TR in forensic settings because it standardizes diagnosis and takes much of the subjectivity out of the diagnosis process. In the courtroom, it provides a recognized, research-based clinical standard for the issue being discussed. The DSM-IV-TR meets the standard of "widely accepted within the scientific community" criteria set forth for the acceptance of scientific testimony in the courtroom. The use of the DSM also facilitates the assessment and development of a structured treatment plan, which is meaningful and measurable. This is now required by all insurance companies in order to reimburse for treatment.
