Explain how fire resistance is accomplished in heavy timber construction.

What will be an ideal response?

Heavy timbers are able to absorb heat and flames much longer than other structural materials. By producing a char when exposed to fire, heavy timbers are able to maintain their structural capacity longer than would structural steel. The char produces a layer of fire protection that shields the wood from sustained fire damage and prevents strength loss. Much of the structural strength is retained until the cross sectional area becomes so small that it will no longer carry the load.
