To be assigned a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, a person must have evidenced depressed mood and loss of interest or pleasure as well as at least five of the following nine symptoms for at least 2 weeks (American Psychiatric Association, 2013a, pp. 160-161):
Depressed mood for most of the day, nearly every day
Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities
Significant weight loss or weight gain when not dieting or decrease or increase in appetite
Insomnia or hypersomnia
Psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day
Fatigue or loss of energy
Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt
Diminished ability to think or concentrate or indecisiveness
Recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal ideation or attempts
