Explain the link between age and use of social media. How is race related to the use of social media? What about gender?
What will be an ideal response?
- The concept of "digital divide" refers to differences in use of social media by various categories of a population (or differing populations). A larger share of white people (87 percent) than African Americans (80 percent) are online, although this racial difference disappears among affluent, college-educated people.
- The share of non-Hispanic whites (87 percent) online is only slightly greater than that for Hispanic people (84 percent), although the divide is greater among older adults.
- In the United States, there is little evidence of a gender gap in online access although, globally, a larger share of men (51 percent) than women (45 percent) is online. A slightly larger share of women (72 percent) than men (66 percent) makes use of social networking sites.
