Alimony is ordinary income, per IRS Publication 504, taxable to the recipient, deductible to the payor. The recipient spouse should file quarterly estimated taxes to avoid a lump- sum due at the end of the year. The spouses must not file a joint return, and:
• Payment is in cash or cash equivalents (checks, money orders);
• The divorce/separate maintenance/support decree designates it as alimony;
• Payment is not child support; and,
• The spouses no longer live together.
