Explain the five reasons given in favor of America becoming a pluralistic society
What will be an ideal response?
Suggested Response: Anglo conformity is a failure because it contradicts the historic identity of the United States as a nation of immigrants. Immigrants succeed because they embrace the civic culture of the U.S. while maintaining their individual diversities.
If people feel proud of whom they are and their culture they will develop a positive self-consciousness that is essential for individuals to determine goals and to achieve them.
In any society, but especially in a democratic society, people rely on each other. A complex society relies on technology, cooperation, and division of labor. Becoming a pluralistic society promotes positive relations between individuals in all areas and from all groups within that society.
The recognition of diversity as an ideal implies that people must promote the idea that our diversity constitutes the best possible situation. Diversity is regarded as positive when people engage in solving problems. If we all examined problems the same way, we would generate similar solutions.
Diversity exists and it makes sense that we value it rather than deny it or try to pretend that it didn't exist. As the most multicultural society in the world today, we must realize the advantages of diversity and embrace pluralism to capitalize on our advantages.
