Poverty can shrink the child’s brain from birth, exposure to toxic trauma (e.g., abuse, neglect), lack of nutrition, increase in cortisol levels which can lead to changing the structure of the child’s brain. This toxic stress and high cortisol levels have been linked to brain damage, poor social skills, low verbal skills, memory impairment, aggression, impulsiveness, and difficulties with emotional regulation.
