What is the relationship between dominance, focal areas, and emphasis? Explain how these concepts

can work together in an interior planting design.

What will be an ideal response?

Focal areas, better than the term focal point since it is more of an area than a specific point, by
necessity should be the most dominant part of a composition or a design. A focal area is the part of the
design with the highest concentration of elements. Focal areas bring emphasis to a portion of the
design. They help the eyes and brain focus on what should be the first thing a viewer sees in a design.
The eye will naturally distinguish the focal area at first, if it is well-designed. From the focal area, the
eye should be able to easily follow lines within the design, yet just as easily return back to the focal
area. Emphasis allows a designer to create eye-catching interest within a design or within an
environment.
