What is a NIC, and how does it work?

What will be an ideal response?

An essential hardware component that each device on a LAN must have in order to communicate is a Network Interface Card, or NIC (pronounced nick). A NIC is also known as an adapter card. As you now know, each NIC has a physical MAC layer address. A physical address is an address that is specific, unique, and assigned to one and only one NIC. A NIC's physical address is, in fact, part of the card's physical manufacture. Therefore, if two or more NICs have the same physical address, communication problems will occur. It is possible in the manufacturing process that two NICs could erroneously be assigned the same physical address. In such an event, one of the two NICs would have to be replaced. In a TCP/IP network, any device, regardless of its type, that is connected to the network is referred to as a host. A host might be a client machine, a server, a printer, or any other type of device connected to the network. That host, however, must have a NIC that allows it to communicate on the network.
