Compare the sympathetic nervous system with the parasympathetic nervous system.
What will be an ideal response?
Both these systems are branches of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system operates during times of stress and prepares the body for "fight-or-flight." The parasympathetic nervous system, by contrast, operates under normal conditions. The sympathetic nervous system arises from long axons off the spine synapsing in a ganglion near the effector organ. The parasympathetic nervous system arises from short axons off the spine that synapse in ganglia near the spine.
