Thematic units are related elements that have a certain theme—an author, genre, topic, etc. They are used in the literature-based approach to help students make connections among reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing activities and among different pieces of literature.
Seven steps are suggested for creating thematic units:
1 Select a topic or theme that you wish to explore.
2 Involve students in the planning.
3 State the overall ideas that you wish the unit to emphasize.
4 Decide on the reading materials and activities that will be included in the unit.
5 List and gather resources, including materials to be read, centers to be set up, audiovisual aids, and guest speakers or resource personnel.
6 Plan a unit opener that will set the stage for the unit.
7 Evaluate the units and the progress students have made.
