Describe how reactive criminal investigations are conducted.

What will be an ideal response?

Reactive criminal investigations are those in which a crime occurs and then the police respond. After being made aware of the crime, an initial or preliminary investigation is conducted by patrol officers who arrive at the scene and take statements, interview witnesses, secure the crime scene (if necessary), and search for evidence. If the crime is serious enough, detectives may be called in to assist with the initial investigation. If an arrest is not made after the initial investigation, and the offense is of a serious nature, a follow-up investigation may be conducted. A follow-up investigation will usually be conducted by a detective but may be done by a patrolman. Witnesses and victims will be reinterviewed, evidence will be submitted to a crime lab for processing, and suspects, if known, will be interviewed. If at any point the perpetrator is identified and arrested, the case would be cleared by police and responsibility would shift to the prosecutor’s office. If no perpetrator is identified, the investigation would cease.
