Explain the purpose of tokenism in a police department.
What will be an ideal response?
The notion of tokenism refers to the hiring or admission of a select few members of a minority group—racial, ethnic, gender, sexual preference, or other identifying characteristic—within a work population wherein the group is highly underrepresented (comprising less than 15% of the workplace population). The individuals are thus the “token” hires, whose presence in the workforce could be used to prevent a lawsuit from being filed against the department.
