Briefly describe some reasons for voluntary racial segregation in adolescence
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: While there is racial and ethnic integration during childhood, by mid-to-late adolescence, segregation is substantial, for a number of reasons. Minority students actively seek support from others who share their minority status, which helps them affirm their identity. Different racial and ethnic groups may be segregated in the classroom based on their level of academic success. Majority group students may be in classes with fewer minority group students due to "tracking" based on academic achievement. Prejudice, both perceived and real, is also a factor.
