What is reflection of feeling? Please discuss and provide an example.

What will be an ideal response?

A reflection of feeling statement provides a mirroring of the feeling or emotion present in a client’s statements. Reflecting feelings involves expressing in the therapist’s words the client’s essential feelings that were either stated or implied. One purpose of reflecting clients’ feelings is to place the emphasis on feelings rather than content and to help clients own their feelings. Usually, therapists begin a reflecting statement with the words “you feel” as an attempt to get a client to own a feeling. The steps in reflection of feeling are to ascertain what feeling the client is expressing, to describe this feeling clearly to the client, to observe the effect of your reflecting statement on the client, and to determine by the reactions of the client if the reflection was facilitative or obstructive.
