Explain some ways teachers can provide appropriate settings and materials for play to be used by children of different ages.

What will be an ideal response?

It is important for teachers to be aware of the different types of play and to recognize that children develop increasing social and cognitive skills as they progress. In particular, this awareness helps set appropriate expectations for young children. For instance, infants need appropriate objects, space, and time for observation, manipulation, and exploration, which helps them learn about the properties of their environment. Toddlers need the kind of toys and props that help them use and integrate their growing ability to mentally represent experiences. Preschoolers need sizable blocks of time to engage in self-selected play and many open-ended materials that lend themselves to exploration and mastery (for instance, clay, blocks, sand and water, and LegosĀ®).
