The three components of Type A Behavior Pattern are achievement striving, time urgency, and hostility. Lydia displays all three of these components. Her achievement striving is evident in that she is working toward being class valedictorian, is involved in many activities and wanted to be first flute in band. Type As tend to earn more awards and participate in more activities than most others and this is evident in Lydia’s case. Time urgency is evident in Lydia’s behavior also. The case indicates that Lydia hates to be late or when others are late, even by a few minutes. Finally, Lydia’s behavior also exemplifies the hostility component of Type A behavior. The case notes Lydia’s frustration at not being chosen as first flute.
