Discuss cigarette smoking as a risk factor for disease in developing countries.
What will be an ideal response?
Risk factors, such as cigarette smoking and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (also called second-hand smoke) require a combination of policy and individual behavior changes. A recent report found that tobacco use is a risk factor for six of the eight leading causes of death in the world. Because of aggressive policy and social interventions in many developed countries, tobacco use is declining. Unfortunately, the tobacco epidemic is shifting towards developing countries, where it is estimated that 80% of all tobacco-related deaths will occur within a few decades.
