Every year I am amazed at the reawakening of life as winter turns to spring. One day on the way home from work, you turn the corner to your
house, and the trees are barren with no leaves. Then suddenly one day, I turn the corner, and the branches on the trees reveal green leaves that seem to have appeared over night. You then can hardly wait to check the peach trees in your backyard to see if they, too, have come to life. They walk into the yard, and I see that the trees have put forth fragrant pink clusters of flowers that completely cover the branches, promising fruit. As you walk over to examine them, I see buds that are swelling, so you know the branches will soon be covered with tiny fuzzy peaches surrounded by long, narrow leaves. I then turn to the flower bed, and you see that the pale yellow and white cup-shaped blossoms are clustered on the stems of the narcissus plants. Just a few feet away, the sword-shaped gladiola leaves are pushing through the ground. Soon you will see yellow, lavender and orange funnel-shaped flowers, welcoming me to the back yard. My favorite, however, is the day you come home to see the amaryllis in their glory. I especially love to watch the unbelievably large, beautiful crimson flowers appear one-by-one at the top of a sturdy stalk. I enjoy this display of nature, knowing that it cannot last forever.
