The Texas Rangers started as private guns for hire, joined in the Texas revolution against Mexico, served as scouts for the U.S. Army in the Mexican-American War, and this grew into border patrol services and state police services. In the beginning, they took the law into their own hands and did not follow the guidelines for equal treatment and due process that police must. Today, they are part of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). They now primarily make criminal and special investigations, apprehend wanted felons, suppress major disturbances, protect life and property, and render assistance to local law enforcement.
