How does autoregulation affect the flow of blood through the tissues?
What will be an ideal response?
Blood flows from the arterioles to the venules at a constant rate, but the flow through capillaries is variable because
each precapillary sphincter goes through cycles of relaxing and contracting alternately up to a dozen times per minute, causing blood to flow in capillaries as a series of pulses. This causes blood to reach venules by passing through different capillaries at different times although the overall flow remains constant, a process called capillary autoregulation.
