Describe the process of cooling water at 1 atm pressure from 125°C to 50°C, at constant pressure. What happens to the water as heat is removed? Show the process on a T-v diagram, and relate the description to the diagram.
What will be an ideal response?
The water vapor will first cool, with a fairly large volume change, from 125°C to 100°C (part (a)). The water will then begin to condense (and the volume will continue to decrease) at 100°C until the water is all liquid (b). At that point, continued cooling at constant pressure will lower the temperature of the liquid water, with little change to volume, until the temperature reaches the end point of 50°C (c).
