Discuss the queer theory as a hybrid perspective on gender. What are the three basic characteristics of the queer theory? What are some of the solutions proposed by queer theorists?
What will be an ideal response?
First, queer theory is focused on eliminating categories related to sexuality such as gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, and so on. According to queer theorists, the use of queer as a way of self-identifying among these groups represents generalization and a disruption of normality. In addition, queer theory proposes that everyone can be, and in fact already is, queer. Queer theorists argue that identity categories should always be open and fluid and that at some point in life everyone has failed to live up to the demands placed on us by gender and society. Essentially, the ways in which categories of gender and sexuality are constructed affect all individuals regardless of where we fall within those categories. Lastly, queer theory aspires to be a broad and far-reaching social theory. In addition, queer theorists propose that we focus on all types of literature, not just the literature that focuses on gays and lesbians in order to obtain a complete picture of how sexuality works.
