The pharynx is a musculomembranous tube extending from the base of the skull to the level of the sixth cervical vertebra, where it becomes continuous with the esophagus. The upper portion, the nasopharynx, is above the soft palate. The middle portion, the oropharynx, lies between the palate and the hyoid bone and has an opening to the oral cavity. The lowest portion, the laryngopharynx, is below the hyoid bone and opens inferiorly to the larynx anteriorly and the esophagus posteriorly.
