To what extent is it valid to claim that Abraham Lincoln was "the Great Emancipator"?

What will be an ideal response?

Most students will recognize the limitations of Lincoln's position. In fact, many may be shocked to learn about them. Strong students will recognize that Lincoln's primary goal was to save the Union. Lincoln's Ten-Percent Plan was an attempt to accomplish that. Stronger students will grasp the complexity of Lincoln's position but should see its fundamental conservatism.
