Discuss similarities across prion disorders.
What will be an ideal response?
The chapter discusses a variety of prion disorders, including Parkinson's disease, transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, Huntington's disease, and Alzheimer's disease. In essence, these degenerative cases are largely caused by the misfolding of proteins in the brain. These misfolded proteins trigger other proteins to misfold, resulting in the spread of the condition. In some cases, such as that of TSE, the spread can happen outside of the infected individual, as evidenced by the "mad cow disease" scare in Great Britain.
