Transgender individuals in the U.S. experience tremendous discrimination as they do not fit within the existing gender binary. According to the U.S. Transgender Survey, gender non-conforming individuals experience discrimination in work, housing, health care, etc. They may have difficulty obtaining necessary paperwork and identification to match with their gender identity further limiting opportunities. Cultural attitudes about gender roles and the gender binary are very influential in this treatment.
