Discuss school counseling implications for ethnic identity development.
What will be an ideal response?
School counselors themselves must first become knowledgeable about the process of ethnic identity development for individuals from minority groups and majority groups. Second, counselors must help to create school climates that embrace ethnic and cultural diversity and that empower students to explore their ethnic and cultural heritages. Third, counselors need to be aware of how ethnic self-schemas can affect children’s, adolescents’, and adults’ daily lives. Counselors might ask clients questions about their ethnic self-schemas. The stages of ethnic identity development provide a framework within which we can examine both the client’s and the counselor’s ethnic self-schemas.
