Discussion moves are sets of standardized statements or prompts that are typically used by the teacher to foster discussion, but can eventually be picked up by students to enliven a discussion. They help a discussion get started, or keep it going, in appropriate and thought-provoking ways. Two very effective approaches, Junior Great Books and Questioning the Author, offer well-planned structures as well as discussion moves that are spelled out.
