Think of how you might evaluate a practice that is familiar to you. Briefly describe the evaluative study you might undertake with information on how the study sample would be selected. To what population would you be able to generalize your study findings on a scientific basis? To what population would you be able to generalize your findings on a logical basis? Explain why.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: If the evaluation of practice is based on a sample of current clients, you would have a convenience sample and would not be able to generalize on a scientific basis. If you select your clients for the study on a random basis, you could generalize your findings on a scientific basis to the population from which the random sample was drawn. You could generalize on a logical basis if you have information on your study sample and your study population that reveals similarities between two groups on relevant variables such as how long the client has been in need of the service.
Learning Objective: 12-4: Explain the basis for which you can generalize the findings of your study on a logical basis if you employ a nonrandom sample.
