Differentiate between dementia and depression. How would you respond to family who insist a parent is depressed and does not have dementia?
What will be an ideal response?
Depression is an affective or mood disorder while dementia is a biologically based brain disorder resulting in cognitive or intellectual dysfunction. Depression may mimic signs of dementia but once treated the dementia can resolve. Dementia is progressive resulting in more loss of ability to complete tasks of daily living. It is difficult for a family to sometimes accept a diagnosis of dementia. First their concerns should be noted and appreciated. Next, they should be educated on the common symptoms and distinctions between the diagnoses. They may be helped by being directed to a cognitive neurology center, depending on the timing of their concern.
