The findings of the FBI’s (2008) Serial Murder Symposium, attended by more than 100 experts on mass murder (FBI agents, detectives, criminologists, and psychiatrists/psychologists experienced with serial killers), lists eight myths about serial killers. Summarize and explain the myth, “Serial killers are all dysfunctional loners.”

What will be an ideal response?

Although many serial killers are dysfunctional loners, the truth is that most serial killers have families, homes, and gainful employment; some have even been churchgoers and high-profile citizens. Serial killers have been everything from drifters to math professors, police officers, and physicians. They hide in “plain sight,” which is why their neighbors are shocked to hear that such a “nice man” was a serial killer and why they are so often overlooked by law enforcement.
