How is summation related to IPSPs and EPSPs? What is the difference between temporal summation

and spatial summation? What will be an ideal response?

Concepts to Consider: Individual IPSPs or EPSPs may be subthreshold. However, the effect they
have on the membrane potential are additive. Temporal summation occurs when EPSPs arrive close
together, with the second arriving before the first has decayed. Spatial summation occurs when the
postsynaptic neuron is stimulated by the release of neurotransmitter from several closely spaced
synaptic terminals. When this happens the postsynaptic neuron is stimulated at several places at the
same time.
