ripd and ospfd are the routing protocol daemons which exchange the routing information between the routers in the same network segment and zebra daemon is the kernel management daemon which update the routing table in the kernel by cooperating with these routing protocol daemons. It acts as a kernel routing table manager and is responsible for changing the kernel routing table and for redistribution of routes between different routing protocols. It makes it easy to add or remove routing protocol daemons without affecting any other software. It is mandatory to run zebra to run any of the routing protocol daemons.
